How Financial Aid Works
Financial aid is
based on need - the difference between what
it costs to attend SF State and what you and your family can afford to
pay toward the cost.
Costs include:
- Direct educational costs
- Registration Fees
- Non-Resident Tuition
- Books
- Supplies
- Living costs
- Meals
- Housing
- Transportation
- Personal expenses
Your total cost will depend on where you live while in
college -- at
home, on campus, or off campus.
Your expected family contribution depends on a formula that takes
these factors into account:
- Family size
- Income
- Assets
- Parents' age
- Number of family members in the household and in college
A form called the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to determine your
expected family contribution.
