Career Planning

For most SF State students, preparing for a satisfying career is an important part of their experience at the University. SF State can help you attain that worthwhile goal in several ways: through internships and co-ops, service learning opportunities, and learning the basics of resume writing and job hunting as you get closer to graduation.

  • Internships/co-ops
An internship is work experience directly related to either your major or your career goal. It can be paid or volunteer, be full- or part-time, and include academic credit or not. Internships are among the most valuable career preparation experiences. By actually working in a specific field, you can discover if it's a good fit for you. In addition, because prospective employers see interns in action and get an excellent idea of their competence and work habits, many interns get hired full time by the firm where they're interning.

SF State's Career Center offers lists of available internships. In addition to internships, SF State also offers co-ops. The Cooperative Education Program helps you find a full- or part-time co-op program that includes course work and academic credit. All co-op positions are paid.

  • Service learning
SF State is a leader in service learning, a national movement in which students, as part of their course work, take on a volunteer project in the community. Through service learning, students apply what they learn in class to real-life situations; in addition, their real-world experience makes their classroom learning more significant.

For example, as part of their course work, SF State students serve as tutorsat one of 15 city tutoring centers. They help older immigrants prepare for citizenship exams or become literate in English. They design Web sites and develop public service advertising campaigns for community agencies. SF State students report that these experiences are among the most valuable of their University careers and help them find jobs after graduation. The Office of Community Service Learning has more information about how SF State students can become fully engaged with their community.

  • Job hunting, resume writing
Looking for good job leads? Or tips on writing an effective resume or acing a job interview? Maybe you need some good, basic career planning advice. The Career Center can help. The Center sponsors workshops, career fairs, and on-campus interviews with leading firms. What's more, the Center's services remain availa ble to you after graduation.
