Brezhnev, Chavez part of distinguished panel to speak at S.F. State

San Francisco, CA, September 3, 1999—Three distinguished authors-Myriam Lesnik Chavez, Luba Brezhnev, and Lailee Bakhtiar van Dillen-will offer perspectives on the role of education and literature in providing a channel for understanding between nations traditionally at odds with each other at a panel discussion at San Francisco State University, 1600 Holloway Ave., on September 16, at 6 p.m., Knuth Hall, in the Creative Arts building.

The discussion, entitled "Mending Nations," is the first in a series of programs sponsored by the SFSU Student Affairs "Stop Hate Campaign" scheduled for the 1999-2000 academic year. Robert Cromey, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in San Francisco, will serve as moderator.

Chavez is the daughter-in-law of labor leader Cesar Chavez and the author of the forthcoming novel Sacrifice. Chavez was a criminal attorney in the Dominican Republic before beginning a career in journalism as a television reporter and political talk show host.

Brezhnev is the niece of former Soviet Premier Leonid Brezhnev and author of The World I Left Behind, Pieces of a Past. She is an expert on the rich traditions of Russia.

Bakhtiar van Dillen hosts the award-winning television series Authors and Critics and is the author of several books including her newest work Harem Letters. She is also a book reviewer for the Independent Newspaper Group and a contributing editor to 20 magazines in 8 countries.

Cromey has been rector of Trinity Episcopal Church for 18 years and has appeared on national television programs "Geraldo" and "Larry King Live" as a civil rights advocate.

Throughout 1999 the university is celebrating its centennial year of service to San Francisco, the Bay Area, California, and beyond. A highly diverse community of 27,000 students and 3,500 faculty and staff, San Francisco State is one of the largest campuses in the nationally recognized 23-campus California State University system.
