Vartan Gregorian, a former SF State faculty member and current president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, will be the keynote speaker and will be awarded an honorary degree. Other honorees include alumnus and former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, who will receive an honorary degree, E-LOAN founder Chris Larsen, who has been named Alumnus of the Year, and business faculty member and executive director of WiRED International Gary Selnow, who will receive the President's Medal. The Commencement ceremony will be broadcast live on San Francisco cable channel 27. There will also be a live Webcast. In addition, check the SF State News site [ www.sfsu.edu/news ] often between May 24 and June 4 for a variety of stories related to Commencement, including profiles of this year's hood recipients from each college and the Liberal Studies Program. Faculty at Commencement Faculty members participating in the Saturday, May 29, Commencement ceremony should line up no later than 12:15 p.m. next to the Student Services building (the north side of the Centennial Village roadway). 'Rites of Passage' for retiring faculty Faculty and staff are invited to honor retiring faculty at the annual "Rites of Passage" celebration held from 4 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 25, at the University Club. President Robert Corrigan, Provost John Gemello, and Vice President J.E. (Penny) Saffold will host the event. Corrigan awarded Cassin a commemorative plaque, trophy and cash bonus. All the STARs of the Month for 2003-04 were recognized for their work in fulfilling the mission of the University. Fee-waiver applications Employee and dependent fee-waiver applications and information for the fall 2004 semester are now available in Human Resources (ADM 252). Beginning Tuesday, June 8, eligible employees may submit their fees and applications to the Bursar/Cashier's Office (ADM 155). Dependent fee-waiver program participants should continue to submit their applications directly to Human Resources. See the

Summer/fall textbooks The earlier a book order is turned in, the better chance the Bookstore has of buying back used books from students at the end of the semester. This benefit allows students to sell back books and get up to 50 percent of what they paid for the book. To do this, however, book orders must be submitted before the buyback periods -- May 17-22 and May 24-28. For details, contact the textbook department at ext. 8-7377 or textbook@sfsu.edu. CET summer camps There will workshops on the following topics: enhancing instructional materials with digital images, creating an instructional Web site, online teaching with Blackboard, and using video to enhance teaching and learning. Treganza exhibits The "Treganza Museum Mural" in the Hohenthal Gallery on the third floor of the Science building spotlights the creation of the famous mural on the third floor of the Science building. Painted by Eduardo Pineda in 1988, the mural features icons that symbolize the various fields of endeavor in anthropology. The exhibit shows how the mural was designed and constructed, with original material from the artists. The show opens Saturday, May 29 and will remain open through the summer. "Cruz de Mayo," a photographic exhibit of observations of the Day of the Holy Cross held in Izalco, El Salvador on May 3, is on display in the hall case on the third floor. Archaeology in El Salvador 2003," a photographic exhibit of the many new discoveries in Central American archaeology this past year, is on display in the hall case on the second floor.
