Presidential directive to facilitate graduation

Note: the following e-mail was sent on 6/15/09 to all faculty and staff.

Dear Colleagues:

Recent information from the Chancellor’s Office has underscored the unprecedented extent of the proposed budget cuts. All of you, no doubt, have questions regarding the impact of those reductions on the institution and on your own personal circumstances, and I want to assure you that we are working to minimize the impact to our campus.

As the Chancellor stated last week, one of the guiding principles governing our decisions through this crisis is to serve as many students as possible without sacrificing quality. While we embrace this commitment, we also know that there will be fewer sections and fewer seats for students, and the roadblocks to graduation that already exist for students will be magnified by the reduction in resources.

In response to this imperative, the University deans, Academic Affairs administrators and the Academic Senate Executive Committee have collaborated to craft a set of policy and procedural revisions that will assist freshmen and sophomores matriculating in the fall. These changes will also assist in graduating students with high units who are near graduation, thus providing greater access to major courses for juniors and seniors. (University Executive Directive 09-35 is anticipated to be posted on the University Policy Page by the end of the week: http://www.sfsu.edu/~ppg/area_index.htm)

As I have said in the past, open communication is vitally important as we make the hard decisions that lie ahead. The current collaborative effort to maintain the principles of educational quality is foremost in this process.
