New students welcomed with week of activities

Aug. 4, 2011 -- SF State will welcome approximately 3,500 freshmen and an equal number of new transfer students with activities that orient, educate and entertain during "Welcome Days" Aug. 17 - 24.

More than 30 events and programs are offered throughout the week, including a panel discussion on residential life, a reception that gives parents the opportunity to meet key administrators, a “Movie on the Lawn,” live thA photo of students gathering on the quad.eatre, talent competitions and an eco-friendly lunch.

One of the most popular events, says Associate Dean of Students and Director of LEAD (Leadership Engagement Activity and Development) Joseph Greenwell, is the session for parents and students called  “SF State Welcome: Faces of Community.”

“This is a wonderful event for our newest members of the SF State community to connect with current students, faculty, staff and alumni from every corner of our campus community,” Greenwell said.

Most events are mandatory for freshmen living on campus and RSVPs are required. For a full schedule of Welcome Days events and to RSVP, visit: http://www.sfsu.edu/~welcome/schedule.html

In keeping with SF State’s nationally recognized commitment to community service, student volunteers will fan out across campus and to neighboring sites for a day of service on Friday, Aug. 19.

Highlights for parents include the “Home Away From Home” session that focuses on safety and wellness resources, and a Parents and Family Program Dinner on Thursday evening.

Parents can continue to stay in touch with campus news and events by signing up for the Parents and Family Program at http://www.sfsu.edu/~parent/
