Whirlwind Wheelchair recognized at Clinton event

State's Whirlwind Wheelchair program was honored at the Clinton Global
Initiative University meeting April 17.

Hosted by former President Bill Clinton, the meeting brings together hundreds of university leaders and students to discuss and devise solutions to some of the world's most pressing problems. Attendees must specify a Commitment to Action -- a plan that outlines how the university will address a problem, either locally or globally.
SF State's commitment is based on the work of Whirlwind Wheelchair, which designs and delivers rugged, low-cost wheelchairs for developing countries. From among this year's hundreds of commitments, SF State's commitment was selected as an exemplary approach to addressing a global challenge and was profiled on stage at a special commitment announcement ceremony.
SF State's commitment includes Whirlwind Wheelchair's plans to expand its operations during the next four years. Whirlwind's plans include establishing new wheelchair factories in the developing world, many of which provide employment for people with disabilities, and designing and constructing wheelchairs for children.
