Campus celebrates all things sustainable Nov. 2-6

November 2, 2009 -- Get on your bike for your morning commute, sample fair trade coffees and purge your closet of unwanted clothes during the first Sustainable SF State Week, Nov 2-6. Students, faculty and staff are invited to learn more about green living at the week's activities, lectures and movies.

"We want the campus community to think about the environmental and social impact of their daily choices," Sustainability Coordinator Caitlin Steele said. "The week will provide a snapshot of what SF State is already doing to become a sustainable campus."

Commuting by bike is encouraged on Bike to School Day on Wednesday when the quad will be turned over to free, valet bike parking and riders will receive free breakfast snacks.

The newly opened bicycle path on campus provides cyclists and pedestrians with a direct, off-road route between the campus and Stonestown mall. The University created the path, located north of Thornton Hall, to encourage bicycle and pedestrian commuting and to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with commuting to campus by car.

The campus community may donate to a clothing drive to support Goodwill and St. Vincent de Paul Society and help divert waste from landfills. On Monday, and Tuesday, donations of used clothing can be dropped off at collection bins in resident halls, the Cesar Chavez Student Center, Administration building and other locations across campus.

The week's events include a talk on Genentech's responsibility and sustainability efforts, part of the College of Business' fourth annual Business Ethics Week which is also taking place Nov. 2-6.
