Pioneers of ethnic studies honored

Hirabayashi, professor emeritus and first dean of the College of Ethnic
Studies, was honored by the University with the President's Medal at
the closing gala for the 40th anniversary commemoration of the College
of Ethnic Studies.

Bestowed by President Robert A. Corrigan, the medal recognizes individuals
whose contributions have provided long-lasting and widespread benefits for
the University and the greater community.
Dean of the College of Ethnic Studies Kenneth Monteiro presented honors for exemplary
leadership to actor, activist and alumnus Danny Glover; Raza Studies and ethnic
journalism pioneer Ana Montes; community activist and first SF State American
Indian Studies Chair Elizabeth Parent; and the leadership of the 1968-69 SF State
student strike, who forged the birth of the College of Ethnic Studies. Darden
Restaurants was recognized for its commitment to diversity in the workforce and
support of community-based programs.
