Nov. 30 admission deadline set for freshmen, undergrad transfers

October 19, 2009 -- The application deadlines for fall 2010 are fast approaching.

The deadline to apply to SF State for first-time freshmen and undergraduate transfer students is Nov. 30, the earliest in the University's history.

No undergraduate or transfer students will be admitted in spring 2010. Only select master's programs will admit students in the spring.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions strongly encourages applicants to pay close attention to deadlines, which are not flexible. "Adhering to deadlines this year is imperative," said Jo Volkert, associate vice president of enrollment management. "Applicants should carefully read every e-mail we send them and pay attention to deadlines."

Applicants for master's degree programs should check application deadlines for specific departments. For a list of graduate deadlines, visit www.sfsu.edu/~gradstdy/program-deadline.htm

This fall, SF State is operating under campus impaction due to cuts in funding by the California State Government. Campus impaction means that students in SF State's six-county local area -- San Francisco, San Mateo, Marin, Alameda, Contra Costa and Santa Clara -- will be admitted under normal standards, while students applying from outside those counties may need a higher grade point average or standardized test score to gain admittance.

In addition, SF State has seven impacted majors for fall 2010. Those include: psychology, journalism, dietetics, nursing, apparel design, interior design and social work. Students who plan to enter any of those seven majors are subject to higher entrance standards and must complete an additional application and list an alternate major when applying for admission. For fall 2010, only first-time freshmen will be allowed to enter SF State with an undeclared major. All undergraduate transfer students must declare a major when applying.

Applicants who think they may attend SF State and plan to live on campus are strongly encouraged to apply for housing as soon as possible, as space is limited. To apply for housing, visit www.sfsu.edu/future/housing/housing.html

Other important dates:
April 10 -- Sneak Preview: This day provides an opportunity for students to tour campus, finalize details regarding admission and meet with faculty.

May 1 -- Intent to register deadline: Students must indicate their plans to enroll at SF State by this date. Undergraduate students who miss the intent to register deadline will be put on a wait list and will not be allowed to attend unless space becomes available. For more information about intent to register, visit: www.sfsu.edu/~admisrec/reg/ITRfaq.html
