Impacted Programs

A major is designated impacted when more applications are received in the priority filing period than can be accepted.

The following majors are currently impacted at SF State University

Apparel Design and Merchandising, Interior Design, and Dietetics.

  • First-time Freshmen may apply to the pre-major only
  • Upper Division Transfers only may apply directly to the major

    Industrial Arts, Industrial Design, and Visual Communication Design

    • First-time Freshman interested should apply as an Undeclared major with an interest in Industrial Arts, Industrial Design or Visual Communication Design
    • Upper Division Transfers only may apply
    • Additional supplemental application information required: design.sfsu.edu/programs
    • Prerequisites:
      • Industrial Arts, Industrial Design, and Visual Communication Design:
        • One (1) College Level Drawing, Sketching, or Drafting course - 3 units
        • One (1) Computer-Graphic related course (such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, In Design, or CAD - 3 units

    Journalism

    • First-time Freshmen First-time Freshman interested should apply as an Undeclared major with an interest in Journalism.

    • Prerequisites:
      • Completion with a C+ or better, course equivalent to SF State's "Social Impact of Journalism" course and SF State's "Newswriting" course.

    Nursing

    • First-time Freshmen should apply as an Undeclared major with an interest in Nursing. Note that this status does not guarantee that students will be eligible for the Nursing major. Students will need to apply for the Nursing major during their 2nd year.
    • Upper-division Transfers only may apply

    Psychology (College of Behavioral and Social Sciences)

    • First-time Freshmen should apply as an Undeclared major with an interest in Psychology. Students will need to apply to Psychology during their 2nd year. Note that interested students will compete for eligibility to the Psychology major based on criteria established by the Psychology Department faculty.
    • Upper Division Transfers only may apply
    • No additional supplemental application required; applicants will be ranked according to data provided on the CSU Mentor application and on official transcripts.
    • Prerequisites:
      • Introduction to Psychology or General Psychology course

    • First-time Freshmen should apply as an Undeclared major with an interest in Social Work. Students will need to apply to Social Work during their 2nd year. If accepted, they may declare Social Work as a major in their junior year.
