Value-Added NewsWatcher is a free Macintosh USENET news reader. It differs from the original version of NewsWatcher by John Norstad by adding support for posting and mailing binary files, by adding filtering of articles (killfiles and selective highlighting), sorting of articles based on article number, author, or subject, and digest processing. MOST IMPORTANT. This version is NOT an "official, John Norstad" version of NewsWatcher. John can't and won't support it, and is not responsible for any bugs we've added to his code. We will attempt to continue to support Value-Added NewsWatcher, and keep pace with the modifications John Norstad makes to his version. John's own binary posting and killfile support will not be available until version 2.1. Since no one can say when this will be available, we have decided to release our own version, now. It is also NOT supported or endorsed in any manner by Northwestern University or ACNS. All questions or comments regarding problems or support should be directed towards us and NOT John Norstad or Northwestern University or ACNS. Value-Added NewsWatcher requires a Mac running System 7.0 or later with 2.5 megabytes or more of memory and a hard drive. The Mac must be connected to the Internet, and MacTCP must be properly installed and configured. For dialup use, Value-Added NewsWatcher works together with the various SLIP and PPP programs, and with AppleTalk Remote Access together with an appropriately configured AppleTalk/IP gateway. va-newswatcher-20b27.0.sit.bin: The program. va-source-20b27.0.sit: The CodeWarrior source code. Included with both archives is a short readme file which documents the additional features found in Value-Added NewsWatcher. All other files (primary documentation, uudecode and ftp helper applications, etc. are to be found with the regular (John Norstad) version of NewsWatcher: ftp://ftp.acns.nwu.edu/pub/newswatcher/ user-doc.msword.sea.hqx: The 2.0b24 user doc (Word format). user-doc-postcard.sea.hqx: The 2.0b24 user doc (postcard format) The "helpers" subdirectory contains copies of other programs which NewsWatcher uses to help it fetch referenced files and extract binaries. In particular, you should get a copy of Aaron Gile's new "uuUndo" program, which NewsWatcher uses to decode attached uuencoded binaries. Also get copies of the current versions of Fetch, Anarchie, and StuffIt Expander if you don't already have them. David Brewster brewster@bis.trw.com Bob Boonstra boonstra@ultranet.com
