SF State Interim Accessibility Language

SF State’s Web Accessibility Guidelines require that all web content be accessible.  In a situation where accessibility barriers are identified and cannot be immediately remedied, the content owner is required to supply an interim message to the web user explaining:

  1. The accessibility barriers that have been identified
  2. The action being taken to remedy the barriers
  3. How interim access to the material in question will be provided

In line with this goal, the SF State Web Accessibility Group has drafted the following Interim Accessibility Message and guidelines for where, and in what cases, the said message should appear.

Interim Accessibility Message

There are two types of Interim Accessibility Messages: General and Specific.  For guidelines on when and where to use the messages, please see Usage Guidelines below.

General Message

This website has been identified as having barriers to accessibility.  The site owner is working to remedy these access barriers by [date].  If you experience problems using this site, contact [CONTACT PERSON / INFO].  For more information on identified accessibility barriers for this site, visit our Accessibility Barriers Statement [LINK].

Specific Message

This content has been identified as having barriers to accessibility.  The site owner is working to remedy these access barriers by [date].  If you experience problems using this site, contact [CONTACT PERSON / INFO]. For more information on identified accessibility barriers for this site, visit our Accessibility Barriers Statement [LINK].

Usage Guidelines

The General Message should be used to identify accessibility barriers that are pervasive on more than one page of the website as a whole (such as a missing Skip Navigation link).  At minimum, the message should be placed on the home page and any page directly linked to from an external site. Alternatively, if the site utilizes some sort of sidebar, the message may appear in the sidebar, so long as it appears on the pages specified above.

The Specific Message should be used to identify individual pieces of content that have accessibility barriers (such as an improperly formatted data table) and be placed at the beginning of the inaccessible content for the page. 

Accessibility Barriers Statement

All sites that are found to have accessibility barriers must create a page on their website which contains an accessibility barriers statement. The accessibility barriers statement should contain:

  • Accessibility Barriers
  • Interim Access Solution(s)
  • Unit Responsible for Changes
  • Completion Date
  • Notes

Accessibility Barriers:

  • Form elements missing labels
  • No skip navigation link
  • No table summary
