Accessibility Showcase - Wednesday, April 30, 2008

The Accessibility Showcase features faculty achievements in implementing Universal Design for Learning as part of SF State University's response to the CSU's Executive Order 926, which mandated that all information, resources, and facilities be universally accessible to students, faculty and staff. The event offers faculty and staff the opportunity to see and discuss innovative work, creative instructional strategies, campus-wide policies, and technical resources in order to realize UDL and promote social justice and equity.

Philosophical Foundations

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act required that state facilities provide qualified individuals with equal access to programs, services, and activities.
The concept of Universal Design was developed by Ron Mace, an architect. Mace believed that rather than retrofitting buildings, facilities and appliances in order to make them accessible to individuals with disabilities, it would be better to integrate universal accessibility into the original blueprint. In 2002, David Rose and Ann Meyer proposed that Universal Design could be applied to education by setting accessibility polices, training faculty and staff to design and implement accessible technology and pedagogy, and procuring appropriate technology.
