Q1. How long is the MSW program and how many
units?
It takes two years for Full-Time MSW program
and a minimum of 60 units is needed to complete the program.

Q2. What are the requirements to apply for
the MSW program?
You must apply concurrently 1) to the
University's Graduate Division; and 2) to the School of Social Work.
The University's Graduate Application is avaliable online at
http://www.csumentor.edu. If you have problems accessing the CSU
Mentor, you may contact the Graduate division by telephone at (415) 338 2234 or
pick-up an application at the Administration Building, Room 253 or download and
print the application at

Q3. What does the
University application require?
-
Students are required to submit the University application to the Graduate
Division by the CSU Mentor or by downloading and printing the application.

Submit Official transcripts from each postsecondary institution regardless of
the number of units taken. One set of official transcripts to the Graduate
Division and one set of official transcript to School of Social Work Master
Program.

A non-refundable fee of $55 must be submitted to the Graduate Division ONLY.
There is no application fee to the School of Social Work.

Q4. What does the School of Social Work
application require?
Students are required to complete the above
requirements. The following documents need to be submitted directly to
the School of Social Work, Masters Program:

MSW application form along with the personal essay/statements (form for the
personal statement is provided on the application).

Three letters of recommendation (from faculty, employers or supervisors).

Verification of employment or volunteer work.

Q5. What is the deadline to apply for the
Fall 2007 Semester?
The deadline to submit the University application
is February 1, 2008.
The deadline to submit the MSW School application is January
21, 2008. |

Q6. Is the GRE (Graduate Record Exam)
required?
GRE is NOT required. International Applicants are
urged to take the TOEFL as early as possible. |

Q7. Are there any prerequisites for the MSW
program?
Yes. Students are required to complete a course in
Statistics or Research. This course can be taken at a community college or SFSU
prior to applying to the MSW program or taken concurrently with the graduate
classes. |

Q8. Are there any informational orientations
for the MSW program?
Informational orientations for prospective MSW
students are scheduled two times during the fall semester. The dates for
informational orientations are available on the Social Work website,
Announcements page or by telephone (415) 338 1003

Q9. Can the applicants meet individually with
the MSW program coordinator or chair of Admissions to discuss the program?
Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend the
informational orientations to discuss the program. You can email the Admissions

Q10. When do applicants get notification of
the admission decisions?
Early April.

Q11. What are the concentrations offered by
the School of Social Work?
-
Social Work Practice with Individuals, Families and Groups
- direct intervention with individuals, groups and families.
-
Administration and Planning
- management and administration, program development and evaluation.
-
Social Development - community organizing, policy analysis, advocacy.

Q12. What about scholarships and financial
aid?
For financial aid information, contact the
Financial Aid office at (415) 338 7000. If any scholarships are available, they
are usually posted near the School of Social Work office or are announced in
the weekly School of Social Work newsletter (Social Working). |

Q13. What is the PPSC Program (Pupil
Personnel Service Credential)?
Graduate social work students may pursue the Pupil
Personnel Services Credential (PPSC) while simultaneously completing their MSW
requirements. They are required to take the Social Work with Individuals,
Families and Groups (IFG) concentration with a field placement in a public
school (K-12), supervised by an individual who has a PPS credential. MSW
students in the SD and A&P concentrations can also complete the
requirements.

Q14. What is the LCSW (Licensed Clinical
Social Worker Credential)?
The LCSW requires a two year internship to be
supervised by the Board of Behavioral Science Examiners, after completing the

Q15. What is the policy on reapplying to the
program?
We usually keep the application folders for a
period of one year. Denied applicants can reapply for the following Fall
semester by submitting a new university application.
If the applicant wishes to use his/her MSW material from the pervious year,
he/she must send a letter to the MSW Admissions Secretary indicating the
documents he/she would like to reuse. The applicant can add new material to
his/her application as well. Transcripts are NOT required to be sent to the
University unless the applicant has taken classes outside SFSU after he/she has
applied the pervious year. |

Q16. Do we accept
transfer students from other universities?
Students can transfer no more than 30 units from
any other accredited social work school. Transfer students still have to go
through the evaluation process like all other applicants. There is no automatic
transfer. |
