Biology Department Withdrawal Policy

In order to withdraw from a Biology course the following information and procedures, which reflect the policies of the Department, MUST be followed:

Students wishing to withdraw from a course must submit a completed withdrawal petition with the documents indicated below, to the instructor for signature and then submit the petition and all attachments to the Biology Department Office, Franciscan Building, for final review and signature from the Chair of the Department. During this time period the student may withdraw only for a verifiable serious and compelling reason that prohibits him/her from attending/completing the course such as illness, accident, or an increase or change in work hours.

  • A Completed Withdrawal Petition Signed by the Instructor
  • Supporting Documentation
  • An Unofficial SFSU Transcript
  • The Student's Current Semester Enrollment

Supporting Documentation consists of a letter on official stationery from the student's doctor or employer that supports the request that as of a certain date s/he was unable to attend class for the remainder of the semester due to either an illness, an accident, or an increase or change in work hours.

As stated in the SFSU Bulletin: "Withdrawals are not normally permitted during the final three weeks except in verified cases of accident or serious illness where the cause of withdrawal is due to circumstances clearly beyond the student's control and where the assignment of an incomplete is not practicable. Ordinarily, withdrawals in this category will involve total withdrawal from the University."

Check with the Biology Department Office for actual withdrawal deadllines for each semester.

The University Withdrawal Policy is: A student may withdraw from an individual course only 2 times no matter what their circumstances are. The third time that the student enrolls in the same course, they CANNOT withdraw for any reason.
