Research Facilities

The Department of Biology is housed in Hensill Hall, with over 180,000 square feet of functional space contained in eight stories. These facilities house undergraduate and graduate instructional and research laboratories equipped with modern analytical apparatus. Special features include:

  • A circulating seawater system, wet rooms and aquaria
  • An electron microscope facility
  • Controlled-temperature and animal rooms
  • Greenhouses
  • Biochemistry, developmental biology, advanced microbiology, and radiation laboratories
  • Computer labs

 The state-of-the-art Laboratory of Conservation Genetics provides compllete PCR and DNA sequencing facilities for SFSU researchers and visiting scientists.

 Research and teaching collections include:

  The Paul F. Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies, on the shore of San Francisco Bay, and the Sierra Nevada Field Campus on the north fork of the Yuba River in Sierra County, both operated by the university, also offer facilities for off-campus research and course work.

  The Biology Department is formally affiliated with the California Academy of Sciences, and several curators on the Academy staff offer advanced courses and guide thesis research. In addition, the superb facilities and collections of the Academy are available to selected students pursuing research.

  San Francisco State University also participates in the programs of the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, on Monterey Bay, operated by the California State University System.

  The University is also a participating member of the NASA-Ames Research Center Consortium.
