CSU System-wide competition — California State University, Dominguez Hills, May 4-5, 2007

STUDENT RESEARCH COMPETITION PROCEDURES AND GUIDELINES  PURPOSE
The annual research competition and system-wide conference promotes excellence in undergraduate and graduate research and creative activity by recognizing outstanding student accomplishment throughout the CSU system.

WHO MAY APPLY
Undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled on any CSU campus, as well as alumni/alumnae who received degrees in spring, summer, or fall 2006 are eligible.  The research presented should be appropriate to the student’s discipline and career goals. Proprietary research is excluded.

There will be separate undergraduate and graduate divisions for each of the following categories (assuming there are more than three entrants):

  • Behavioral and Social Sciences
  • Biological and Agricultural Sciences
  • Business, Economics, and Public Administration
  • Creative Arts and Design (creative projects are welcome-see “Presentation Guidelines”)
  • Education
  • Engineering and Computer Science
  • Health, Nutrition, and Clinical Sciences
  • Humanities and Letters
  • Physical and Mathematical Sciences
  • Interdisciplinary
HOW TO APPLY
The annual CSU Student Research Competition takes place in two phases. The first part of the competition is held on each campus; the second phase takes place for selected students on a CSU campus that is hosting the system-wide research conference. This year the system-wide competition is California State University, Dominguez Hills.

SFSU students interested in participating in the CSU Student Research Competition must complete, collate, and submit the following materials to Lisa White, Division of Graduate Studies (ADM 254) by Monday, February 19, 2007:

  • An original and 5 copies of the Student Delegate Registration Form (click here for MS Word version);
  • An original and 5 copies of a written summary of the research, not to exceed five double-spaced pages. Use fonts and margins that ensure legibility. Each copy must include the name of the student and title of the presentation;
  • An original and 5 copies of appendices (bibliography, graphs, photographs, or other supplementary material) not to exceed three pages.

Following submission of this material by the February 19 deadline, students will be notified of the details (date/time/place on Feb 26 – Mar 2, 2007) for the oral presentations of research to a panel of judges and an audience.

PRESENTATION GUIDELINES

  • Each student will have ten minutes to present his or her work and three minutes to listen and respond to questions.
  • It is expected that the student will not make an oral presentation simply by reading directly from this summary.
  • Presenters are encouraged to use delivery techniques that promote interaction with the audience.
  • Students may, if they wish, use audio-visual equipment in their presentations (if so, students have to specify A-V equipment needed on student delegate registration form).
  • Applicants in the Creative Arts and Design category may present an audio and/or visual record of a performance they have given or a work they have created; their oral presentation should focus on the rationale and historical context underlying their interpretation of the material.

Names of the students who are selected through the campus level competition to represent SFSU at the system-wide conference will be sent to California State University, Dominquez Hills, with copies of their research summaries. The University will provide funds for travel and lodging for students selected in each competition category to attend the system-wide competition on May 4-5, 2007.  Winners of the system-wide competition will also receive monetary awards.

At the system-wide competition at CSU Dominguez Hills, students will present their work orally before a jury and audience. Students will compete by discipline category and class standing (undergraduate/graduate) as described above in "Who May Apply."  Oral presentation guidelines are the same as for the SFSU campus competition.

EVALUATION CRITERIA
Each entry (oral presentation and written summary) both for the SFSU campus competition and the system-wide competition at CSU Dominguez Hills will be judged on the following criteria:
  • clarity of purpose--15%
  • appropriateness of methodology--15%
  • interpretation of results--15%
  • value of research or creative activity--15%
  • ability of the presenter to articulate the research or creative activity--15%
  • organization of the material presented--15%
  • presenter's ability to handle questions from the jury and the general audience--   10%
CSU SYSTEM-WIDE AWARDS
Based on the recommendations of the juries, cash awards will be provided to the outstanding presenter and the runner-up in both the undergraduate and graduate divisions of each category. If a category has been combined because of fewer than three presenters in one division, awards will be provided to the outstanding presenter and the runner-up without regard to class standing. In any division with just three entrants, only one award will be given. In divisions with more than ten entrants, two runner-up awards will be presented.
