A Note from the Director

Caltabiano PhotoWe're going to make great music together!

As your new music conductor, I am thrilled and excited about the upcoming season of great music and getting to know each one of you. I look forward to making the SFSU Symphony a challenging and rewarding musical experience for music majors, non-majors, and community members alike.

For future performing professionals, the symphony will provide the necessary practical experience in orchestral playing, and for our more advanced students, in sectional leadership. Composers, historians, and educators will find the "inside knowledge" that will put you ahead in your careers. And, of course, everyone involved - including myself - will enjoy the great orchestral literature from the past 250 years, and will know the joys of large-ensemble music making. I anticipate a great season of musical exploration with all of you, my old and new friends.

Greg Magie,
Conductor

Information for Non-Majors

The SFSU Symphony welcomes students not enrolled as Music Majors, and we always have several non-majors who perform with us. Non-majors participate in the same way as music majors. They attend two rehearsals per week and occasional extra rehearsals, and are included in all performances, even those outside of SFSU.

Non-majors should register for MUS 371, and will get 1 GE credit per semester. There will be no credit/no-credit grading (this is a change from previously posted information). Upon my approval, non-California residents may elect to participate but not register. This may be helpful if you are paying tuition by the credit unit. Please understand that you still will be expected to be a full participant.

Just like music majors, non-majors must play a seating audition. (See the schedule above.) Unlike music majors, you are not required to play the assigned repertoire. Instead, excerpts from any two contrasting pieces will be accepted. Because we have to give our music majors priority, non-majors will usually not be seated in first-chair positions, but all other positions are open.

Top Information for Community Members

We know that there are many good musicians who have careers in other areas but wish to keep up their playing. The SFSU Symphony has several talented players who fit this category, and they feel at home because of the broad spectrum of ages and cultures represented in the orchestra.

The SFSU Symphony tries hard to accommodate the special needs of community members who have work and family obligations. While these members are strongly encouraged to attend all rehearsals, we understand that some people do not have that much time in their busy schedules. Community members are expected to attend up to only one rehearsal per week, and we recommend that this be the Wednesday evening rehearsals. If your schedule more easily fits the Monday afternoon sessions, that's fine, too.

Like everyone else in the orchestra, community members are asked to audition for seating. (See the schedule above.) Unlike music-majors, you do not need to play the assigned repertoire Instead, excerpts from any two contrasting pieces will be accepted. Because we have to give our music majors priority, community members will not usually be seated in first chair-positions, but all other positions are open.
