Study Abroad & International Exchange Programs

An Overview of SFSU Bilateral Exchange Programs

Bilateral Exchanges are official academic programs of San Francisco State University. Students can continue their education and earn credit toward their degrees while studying at one of SFSU's associate universities overseas. Bilateral Programs differ from CSU International Programs in two ways:

1) they are open only to San Francisco State University students, or students attending SFSU on the inter-campus visitor's program.

2) one or two semesters in length, while the CSU IP programs are ALL academic year in length.

Bilateral Exchanges offer these special features:

  • No overseas tuition or administrative costs are charged; students pay only regular SFSU campus fees.
  • Students are enrolled for a full academic year (or a semester, in some cases) at a host university and earn resident credit for their coursework.
  • All campus financial aid (except work study) is applicable overseas.
  • On-site assistance by a host university and/or staff.

How do I apply?

  1. Attend an Information Meeting. If you cannot attend one of the regularly scheduled Information Meetings, please request the "Extra Study Abroad Meeting Request Form" from the front desk.
Begin researching program via the Office of International Programs International Resource Center and the Internet.
  2. Attend an Application Session.Go to Calendar Events for times.
  3. Make the meeting on time. The meeting generally takes 30 minutes. You will receive the full application packet.
