Level
I (entry): Met by Graduate Essay Test (upon admission or before
completing 2nd semester; go to: www.sfsu.edu/~testing/get.html)
Level II (exit): Met by Master’s Comprehensive Written Examination,
or Option I, Culminating Experience
II.
CORE REQUIREMENTS:
Core requirements include the following units: (9 units)

ISED 797 Seminar in Education Research (3);
-
SPED 788 Public Policy/Legal Rights for People with Disability (3);
and
- SPED
801 Diversity in Special Education-Family, Resources & Culture (3),
or SPED 779 Family Systems & Services for Young
Disabled Children (3)
III. SPECIAL EDUCATION COURSES: as required by area of
emphasis and approved by graduate program advisor (12 units)
IV. RELATED STUDIES COURSES: selected on basis of professional
goals and degree emphasis, and approved by graduate program advisor (6
units)
V. CULMINATING EXPERIENCE * (3 - 6 units)
Review and select Option I, II or II as required by area of emphasis and
approved by graduate program advisor:
Option I (3 units):
SPED 894 Creative Work in Special Education (3 units); or
SPED 895 ** Field Study (3); or
SPED 898 ** Master’s Thesis (3), and Oral Defense of Thesis
Option II (3 units):
SPED 881 Advanced Research Seminar in Special Education (3); and
Master’s Comprehensive Written Examination
Option III (6 units):
Two Elective Graduate Seminars, which will reflect critical analysis
of literature and application of research; and
Master’s Comprehensive Written Examination
Minimum and Maximum Units: 30-33

Option I required for the following emphasis areas: Moderate/Severe
Disabiltiies required to complete SPED 898 and Oral Defense of Thesis;
Early Childhood Special Education and Visual Impairments required
to complete Option I with SPED 881 as pre-requisite; and students
in Mild/Moderate Disabilities emphasis who are advised to select
Option I, must complete SPED 881 as pre-requisite.
