Everything You Wanted to Know
In
an effort to clear up myths and misinformation about
sexuality, SFSU this spring unveiled its new National Sexuality Resource
Center. The first of its kind in the United States, the Center will
provide researchers, health practitioners and the public with accurate
and up-to-date research material on sexual health, education and rights.
"We now have an important educational resource that will prove
an invaluable ally in promoting health and individual well-being,"
said former U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, who delivered the keynote
address at the February opening of the center, located at 16th and Mission
streets in San Francisco.
The Center, supported by major funding from the Ford Foundation, will
sponsor original sexuality research and serve as a clearinghouse for
research and policy, and publish an online peer-reviewed academic journal.
Gilbert Herdt, director of both the Center and the University's Human
Sexuality Studies Program, said the Center will work to "end the
silence and game-playing about sexuality and help Americans understand
how to sustain a healthy and pleasurable sexual relationship across
life."
SFSU launched a master's degree program in human sexuality studies in
2001. The program is the first in advanced study of sexuality in the
West.
