Bravo for the BardA note of appreciation for your coverage of alumnus Al Martinez, “The Bard of L.A.” (Spring/Summer 2012). I was part of The Golden Gater newspaper crew when Al arrived on campus, and I still retain a good image of that slim, sharp looking kid in his Marine Corps uniform on the day he turned up. He went further in workaday journalism than any of us did, for sure, and it is great to see him honored for it. |
Flight of the Living DeadThank you for your recent article covering my thesis research on honeybees that have been parasitized by the Zombie Fly Apocephalus borealis (Spring/Summer 2012). As a quick update, more than 15,000 reads have been logged, each of these representing an individ- ual foraging trip by a tagged bee. Right now we are in the process of analyzing the massive amounts of data and have set up a separate website, zombeewatch.org, to track the spread of this honeybee parasite. We are continuing to pursue funding through grants and dona- tions, which will allow us to continue to study this phenomenon and evaluate its potential impacts on honeybee colonies. --Graduate student ChrIs Quock (B.A., ’10) San Francisco |
