Paul Barnes – An Exceptional Member of SFSU Community
Dr.
Paul
Barnes (BA ’60 and MA ‘63, Biology) has been an exceptional member
of the SF State community for the last 30 years. After receiving 2 degrees
at SF State, Barnes attended University of Kansas, Lawrence in 1969 and
earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry. Barnes continued his postdoctoral work
at the School of Medicine at the University of Kansas (1969-71) and the
University of Maryland (1971-72), and also at the University of Southern
California (1972-73).
Dr. Barnes has held numerous prominent positions at San Francisco State:
Chair of the Biology Department, member of the Academic Senate and the
Curriculum Review and Approval Committee, Member and Chair of CSE Curriculum
committee, President of SFSU chapter of Sigma Xi, member of the University
Promotions Committee, and Chair of the Clinical Science RTP committee.
These are only some of the highlights of the Dr. Barnes’ past work and
involvement. Presently, Dr. Barnes is the Dean of Faculty Affairs and Professional
Development.
His
work has established him a recognized name here at San Francisco State
University along with his research and development, which has gained him
several prestigious awards. Dr. Barnes has been a recipient of many research
and development awards from funding organizations including the National
Science Foundation and NASA-AMES Research Center. Dr. Barnes has also been
recognized at SF State with the award of Meritorious Performance and Professional
Award. His recent research, Acceleration Training with a Short-Arm Centrifuge
on Work Capacity and Microgravity Induced Orthostatic Intolerance, was
awarded by NASA-AMES Research Center (1999-2000). Dr. Barnes along with
his academic work and his involvement in the University has published his
work many times throughout his career. His first publication was in 1971
and he has continued to write more published works to the present day.
Dr. Paul Barnes is an asset to San Francisco State University and his commitment
to higher education is recognized by his many accomplishments.
