In Memoriam: Rene Marxheimer: 1923-2000

      Professor Rene Marxheimer was the first faculty member hired after the establishment of the Engineering program at San Francisco State in 1959. Rene served as the first Associate Dean for the Division of Engineering (now the School of Engineering) from 1968-72 and made the preparation for its first accreditation in 1972. As the head of engineering he was fully committed to the program and always on the look out for ways to improve it and enhance its reputation. As a faculty member, he was fully dedicated to his students yet very demanding and insisting on the highest level of performance. He started many of the courses that are still taught today. He was instrumental in establishing a modern Electric Power Engineering Laboratory at the University by raising external funds and soliciting equipment donations.  He played a pivotal role in establishing the Beth Pack Scholarship fund at the University.
    Although Professor Marxheimer retired in the late 1980's he maintained strong ties with the University through participation in the Alumni Chapter activities and other organizations within and outside the School of Engineering. Many of his former students remember him with respect and appreciation for his influence on their careers. He has touched many lives and will be missed.
    Professor Marxheimer’s friends and colleagues in the School of Engineering, on the SFSU campus at large, and in the Bay Area Chapter of IEEE, where he was so active, have gotten together to create an endowed scholarship in his name. We know that Professor Marxheimer would be deeply gratified to see the response that this memorial scholarship has engendered; and we welcome the contribution of students and alumni who want to help acknowledge this man who worked so hard to develop the School of Engineering at San Francisco State University.
