MESA Engineering Program (MEP)
The College of Science and Engineering at SFSU appoints new MEP Director,
Doris Roman. The Math, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA)
is actively addressing recruitment and retention for students in the School
of Engineering. Formerly, the Director of the Southwest regional
office for the University of Notre Dame’s Graduate Education for Minorities
Consortium (GEM), she was also the associate director of academic programs
for Cornell University’s Minority Engineering Program and the assistant
dean of students at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.
Doris comes to SFSU with 15 years experience in the administration of support
service programs for students in higher education.
As the MEP Director, Doris is actively addressing recruitment and retention
of students wishing to obtain careers in engineering and technology.
MEP provides services in outreach/admissions, academic advising, tutoring,
jobs & internships, and scholarships. Students can find a strong
base of support while pursuing their degrees in SFSU’s School of Engineering.
MEP recruits historically underrepresented students into SFSU’s engineering
program. Throughout their studies, the students receive academic
support and counseling to keep them on track toward their degrees.
This year MEP @ SFSU will host the Northern California JETS-TEAMS competition.
The Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) – Tests of Engineering
Aptitude, Mathematics and Science (TEAMS) will be held at SFSU this February
in conjunction with Engineers Week. The JETS-TEAMS competition challenges
students in ways that no other program does. TEAMS is a rigorous
competition in which teams of high school students learn team development
and problem solving and then participate in an open-book, open–discussion,
engineering problem competition between high schools. From this one
test, teams receive local, state and national recognition.
