Strong family ties lower depression in Chinese youth. A strong sense of family obligation in Chinese-American homes may prevent symptoms of depression in adolescents, according to a new study by SF State psychologists Linda Juang and Jeffrey Cookston. Read full story in SF State News

More than 65,000 Americans have signed up to plant sunflowers and watch the bees that come to them as part of the Great Sunflower Project, which was masterminded by San Francisco State University biologist Gretchen LeBuhn. Wired Science 6/5/09

Astronomers Seek New Home Closer to Home - "I'm betting that there are planets like Earth or Mars or Venus around either or both of those stars [Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B], and the only question is whether we'll be able to detect them," said Debra Fischer, an astronomer at San Francisco State University. New NSF-funded engineering scholarships. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a four-year grant totaling $598,840 to the University's School of Engineering, the largest in the School's history. The funding will provide 35 scholarships per year to undergraduate students of civil, mechanical, electrical and computer engineering, and augment mentoring and professional networking programs.

$1.7 million grant will prepare stem cell researchers. SF State will become a training ground for future stem cell researchers, with support from a $1.7 million grant from the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). The University's new stem cell biology training program is led by Biology Professor Carmen Domingo.
