Hero : the Real Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Blockbuster Culture in Chinese Cinema (Lecture in English)

Lecture focuses on how recent Chinese cinema has changed from an artisan cinema into a commercial blockbuster style cinema, and particularly, how the film Hero (2002, directed by Zhang, Yimou) topped box office records of all Chinese films ever.

Professor Elena Russo, an eminent eighteeth-century scholar, gives a presentation in the FR 535/835 on Les Philosophes. The talk will be in English. Russo, who teaches at John Hopkins University, is currently a visiting professor at Stanford University.

An Egyptian Cultural Day

An Arab Culture Event on Egypt , its language, music, art, food, and tourism, organized by the Arabic Program in the Dept of Foreign Lang and Lit. The event will include live songs and music, a lecture on the Arabs and the Arab World, short Egyptian films, and an art exhibit by Egyptian artists living in the Bay Area.

 

Ancient Greek Epic and its Cultural Legacy (Open Classroom)

Lecture on Indian Sufism, and a short documentary on a Sufi Shrine in Lahore ( Pakistan ) and then a class discussion about Madhumalati, a Sufi Romance.

Prithvi Shobhi teaches courses on South Asian cultures in the Humanities Department, SFSU.

A Discussion on Adjusting and Integrating into the American Culture

Pauline Wan is a Clinical Counselor/Liaison with International Students at the Counseling and Psychological Services. She is very experienced in helping students with issues on multiculturalism

“Breaking Barriers”: A Campus Premiere (film)

A Campus Premiere of a 35 min. film chronicling the study abroad adventures of SFSU students, with a focus on the “Before” and After” aspects of the experience

This is a special premiere of a short film which interviews a group of typical SFSU students, prior to their study abroad experience, about their hopes, fears, dreams, and expectations, and, then, interviews the same group, one year later, following their return from study abroad, In this manner, the audience is able to follow the sequence of events, and see the results at the other end.

These are real stories of overseas adventure, with real drama, told by real SFSU students. Don't miss it!

Japanese tea ceremony (Cha-no-yu) in the Omotesenke tradition. Guests will be seated on tatami straw matts in an authentic tea room and served Japanese sweets and matcha green tea prepared according to 400-year old procedures. Up to 5 guests per session. Professor and instructor of WOMS 564/764 class, “Women Writers and Movements” will be presenting with students on her current research regarding “Native Origins” on Indigenous women worldwide as genetic/genome subjects for tracing these women's origins.

Prof. Shobhi would lecture on Wole Soyinka, the Noble Laureate littérateur from Nigeria , show a video of his interview with Bill Moyers and then the class would discuss essays by Soyinka and Ngugi Wa Thiongo on the role of a writer in African society.

Prithvi Shobhi teaches courses on South Asian cultures and Comparative Civilizational Analysis in the Humanities Department, SFSU.

The Department of Africana Studies sponsors a monthly discussion session dealing with topics relevant to African Americans. The video is about a young, energetic and idealistic African leader. After the film, we will discuss how realistic he was in his dreams for Africa. Students will discuss what his efforts did for Pan-Africanism, and awareness of African issues in America.

Global Health: International Vision ~ Local Action

This three hour class will introduce students to the topic of Global Health through discussion, mini film and guest speaker. We will have a segment of the class led in peer education by Masters in Public Health students enrolled in HED 810. We will also have guest speakers from Hesperian Publishing - a grassroots organization devoted to community based health education and medical training for people in many places where there are no doctors.

 

China Orientation

From a common Chinese people's perspective, I will do a general introduction to Chinese culture, basic facts & figures, history, social policies and social welfare system. I will also describe the dramatic changes and developments in China in the past three decades, and how Chinese people react to these.

Mr. Zhao is not a specialized anthropologist or sociologist, just average Chinese citizen witnessing and being affected by all the policies, systems and changes in China.

The Architecture of the Impossible: St. Petersburg as a Most Intentional City

A presentation of an electronic slide show and on the materialization of St. Petersburg, the most mythical of Russian cities, in the bog and fog of the extreme north of the Russian Empire. Dr. Hanson will discuss how this neo-classical city's architecture functioned in Russia 's search for modernity and cultural integration.

 

Lecture & Presentation on Globalization, Food and Hunger (Open Classroom)

Why does extreme hunger still exist in a world of food abundance? On November 15, the instructor will be lecturing about and students in this class will be discussing the effects of economic globalization on food security worldwide.

Students will also be presenting their finding on how different foods find their ways around the planet.

Celebrate SF State History and the History of International Students at SF State

Environmental Stewardship on a Global Scale (Open Classroom)

GEOG/ENVS 600, Environmental Problems and Solutions, will be hosting an informational booth which will present facts on environmental issues around the world. The focus will be on creating public awareness of the interconnectedness of the global environment and how consumer choices can help improve conditions outside the U.S.

Students in BECA 580 – Media and Community Service – traveled to Thailand in June of 2007 to produce videos for the Thai Society for the Conservation of Wild Animals. The videos they produced will be screened, and students/faculty will be available to answer questions.

Early college libraries are works of beauty, with stunning interiors and valuable collections. Walking Tour of Gold Rush San Francisco

This is a walking tour of an area that today is considered part of Chinatown and the Jackson Square District (the commercial heart of 19 th Century San Francisco ). Topics discussed include the following: Hearth of the City, Gold Rush Landscape, The History of the Chinese in San Francisco , Barbary Coast, Sin in San Francisco and Chinatown – a tourist magnet.

This will be a 3 hour walk on mostly flat roads. Please wear comfortable shoes.

Film: Crossing the Bridge – Sounds of Istanbul

Time: 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Location: Burk Hall, Room 28

Presenters: Turkish Student Association

This feature film is a musical documentary that spans a rich spectrum of cultures and people living in Turkey , questioning the conventional East versus West dichotomy. “Crossing the Bridge” was a selection in the Cannes Film Festival in 2005. In this film, Alexander Hacke, member of the German avant garde band Einsturzende Neubauten, sets out to capture the musical diversity of Istanbul.
