April 2003 STAR of the Month

Erasmo flores-Gonzales

The lawns around campus are perfectly manicured this spring thanks in part to Erasmo Flores-Gonzales, a grounds worker who's taken the job of maintaining the University's landscape to a whole new level.

For his dedication to creating a better system for maintaining the lawns, Flores-Gonzales recently received SFSU's STAR of the Month award.

A native of El Salvador who's lived in the Bay Area since 1983, Flores-Gonzales has earned the praise and respect of co-workers yet he's quick to play down his contributions.

"I just like what I do and I like to be outside," said the modest Flores-Gonzales, who's been with the University for three years.

Flores-Gonzales' responsibilities include cultivating the shrubbery and flora on campus, as well as repairing and maintaining the sprinkler systems.

"Erasmo also has an exceptional talent for shrub and small-tree pruning, and our large shrubs have never looked so good," said Phil Evans, director of campus grounds. "His stamina, flexibility in taking on work assignments, personal effort and attention to detail have resulted in the most consistently attractive lawns in decades."

After putting in a long day's work, Flores-Gonzales leaves campus in the afternoons and looks forward to his primary responsibility: his family. Among his favorite activities is playing soccer with his 4-year-old son.

Please join us in congratulating Erasmo and thank him for making such a difference.

As the STAR of the Month, Flores-Gonzales will enjoy four free lunches on campus, a free parking pass or equivalent in one month's public transportation costs, and more. He will also be eligible for the STAR of the Year award.
