Gulf area students to be admitted on conditional basis

SAN FRANCISCO, September 2, 2005 -- San Francisco State University announced today that it is accepting applications from students whose university attendance has been disrupted by the effects of Hurricane Katrina, effective immediately. Students from the Gulf areas of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama may be admitted conditionally and enroll in classes this semester, even if they lack proper academic documents.

Consistent with California State University directives announced yesterday, in-state fees will be charged.

"We are committed to working with students one-on-one to help them sort through the best options at this difficult time," said Jo Volkert, associate vice president for enrollment planning and management. "Counselors will help to expedite admissions, explore financial aid, identify classes with available space and suggest other options."

Priority will be given to:

1) California residents who had previously planned to attend institutions in the Gulf regions of Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi this fall;
2) Students from hurricane-affected areas previously offered CSU admission for the fall 2005 term;
3) Former CSU students enrolled or planning to enroll fall 2005 in a Katrina-affected college or university in Louisiana, Alabama or Mississippi; and
4) Students who can document fall 2005 admission to or recent attendance at any regionally accredited college in the areas of Louisiana, Alabama or Mississippi affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Interested undergraduate students should call (415) 338-2037 or e-mail outreach@sfsu.edu. Graduate students should contact Graduate Admissions at (415) 405-3506 or gradstdy@sfsu.edu.
