NASA astronaut, SFSU alumna Yvonne Cagle to cap weeklong celebration of 25th anniversary of SFSU student center
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 21, 2000 - Yvonne Cagle, one of only four female African-American astronauts in NASA's history, a physician and 1981 alumna of San Francisco State University, will speak on campus Sept. 29 as part of a weeklong celebration to honor the 25th anniversary of the Cesar Chavez Student Center.
The week's events also celebrate recent renovations to the building, including a remodeled Malcolm X Plaza and new multicultural center, art gallery and 500-seat auditorium. The Cesar Chavez Student Center, located at 1650 Holloway Ave. on the SFSU campus, was built in 1975 after more than 10 years of planning. - Thursday, Sept. 28, Political Day: Students will give speeches "Honoring the Heroes of the Building," including Cesar Chavez, Rosa Parks, Rigoberta Menchu, Malcolm X and former Student Union Assistant Director Jack Adams. Noon. Malcolm X Plaza.

- Friday, Sept. 29, First Annual "In the Spirit of Cesar Chavez" Awards Reception: The weeklong celebration concludes by recognizing three SFSU students and three members of the SFSU campus community for their service to the Student Center and University. 5-7 p.m. Jack Adams Hall in the Student Center. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place each day at noon on Malcolm X Plaza. Throughout the week, there will be live music and information tables from student clubs and organizations. A historical exhibit on the Student Center will be on display throughout the semester.
