In Memoriam

Anthony James Bravar, emeritus professor and former dean of the College of Creative Arts, passed away at home in Youngsville, N.C., on July 9, after returning from a family visit in London. He was 76 years old.

Bravar received his BFA in Theatre Arts from SF State in 1952. He held an advanced degree in scenic design from the Yale School of Drama. As a Fulbright Scholar, Bravar studied at the Rome Opera House and continued to travel widely throughout his life. He spent his career in fine arts and arts administration as a dean, professor and consultant. Bravar served as dean of SF State's then-named School of Creative Arts from 1977 to 1982. In addition to his time at SF State, he served as provost and dean for Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Wash.; dean of academic affairs for the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts; arts consultant to the Economic Development Board of Singapore; and executive director for the Alaska State Council on the Arts, the New Hampshire Commission on the Arts, and the Manchester (N.H.) Institute of Arts and Sciences.

Over the years he served as scenic designer, production designer and opera director for a variety of productions. Most recently, he taught opera courses at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Duke University in Durham, N.C.

Bravar is survived by his two daughters, Kate and Margaret, two sons-in-law, and five grandchildren.
