SFSU's role in Katrina recovery

In the wake of record destruction and human displacement caused by Hurricane Katrina, San Francisco State University administration, faculty, staff and students are reaching out to those affected. "San Francisco State University has a role to play in the long relief effort that will be necessary," said President Robert A. Corrigan in a Sept. 8, 2005 message to the campus community.

Here is information on how you can get involved:

Blood drive Sept. 27-28

The Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) and Student Health Service invite the campus community to join in a blood drive Sept. 27-28. The blood will be collected by Blood Centers of the Pacific which will work with its sister organizations in Hurricane-affected areas to ensure the optimal use of all donated blood. SHAC will receive $5 per unit of blood if 50 units per day are donated and will donate any money received to the Red Cross.

Blood drive details:

When: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Tues., Sept. 27, and Wed., Sept. 28.

Location: Student Health Service

How to help in San Francisco

San Francisco's citywide effort to find housing and services for people displaced by Hurricane Katrina is well under way with the help of a variety of campus departments and faculty. SFSU's Urban Institute is working with local relief agencies and will coordinate campus projects and volunteer opportunities. Contact the Urban Institute at (415) 338-6419 or Katrina@SFSU.edu or visit: www.sfsu.edu/~urbins/

Admission/enrollment for displaced students

Students whose academic lives were halted by Hurricane Katrina can continue their education at any California State University campus, including SFSU. Students registered at higher education institutions closed by Katrina may enroll without transcripts and pay only in-state fees. Help with housing is also available. Interested undergraduate students should call (415) 338-2037 or e-mail outreach@sfsu.edu. Graduate students should contact Graduate Admissions at (415) 405-3506 or e-mail gradstdy@sfsu.edu.

Extended counseling hours

For students on campus with family or friends in the hurricane affected areas or those who feel the need to talk with professional counselors, SFSU Counseling and Psychological Services is offering drop-in counseling Monday through Friday in room 208 of the Student Services Building. For more information, call (415) 338-2208 or visit: www.sfsu.edu/~psyservs/
