Campus opens new Veterans Services Center

Nov. 16, 2010 -- At the opening of SF State's Veterans Services Center on Nov. 10, student veterans were invited to mark their last deployment on a large world map, adding colored pins to locations as diverse as rural Alaska, Iraq and tiny Pacific islands.

"We want vets to know that they aren't alone here on the campus and this map reminds us of the many diverse experiences that student veterans bring to our community," said Rogelio Manaois, veterans benefits coordinator.

Housed in the Student Services Building in space shared with the Career Center, the newly opened facility brings together a range of veterans' support services under one roof, including pre-admissions counseling, educational benefits assistance as well as a study area with computer workstations. There are 309 veterans currently enrolled at SF State in addition to another 332 students who are receiving benefits as dependents of veterans.

"This new Center will be a one-stop shop for veterans support services," said Jo Volkert, associate vice president of enrollment management. "The Career Center is a logical home, since our aim is to support veterans as they transition to the work place."

The Veterans Services Center is located in the Student Services Building, Room 206, and is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. For more information, see the veterans website: http://www.sfsu.edu/~veterans/index.html
