College of Business honors professors, staff

August 17, 2005

"This is an annual celebration of excellence," Associate Dean Connie-Marie Gaglio said. "There were several strong candidates for each award which made the decisions very difficult."

In recognition of their efforts, the college awarded $1,000 to Paton and Bollapragada, and $2,000 to Sengupta for use in their research. In addition, the College honored 30 staff members for their service to faculty and students.

The overall award for excellence in teaching, research and service went to Sanjit Sengupta, chair of marketing. Besides managing the department's customer service, class scheduling and staffing, Sengupta teaches two graduate marketing classes. He believes that an energetic teaching style, classroom interaction and the use of students’ own work experience are key to a successful business education.

"It's what most good teachers do here in our college, and the students appreciate that," he said.

Research-award recipient Ramesh Bollapragada, assistant professor of decision sciences, published eight research articles in 2004-05, including "Managing Inventory and Supply Performance in Assembly Systems" in Management Science, and "Proactive Release Procedures for Just-in-Time Job Shop Environments, Subject to Machine Failures" in Naval Research Logistics. He also presented two papers at the INFORMS annual meeting held Oct. 24-27 in Denver.

He has presented his research on operations management at more than a dozen international conferences. At SFSU, Bollapragada serves as faculty adviser for the Indian Student Association and is a member of the Academic Senate.

Teaching-award recipient Bruce Paton, assistant professor of management, emphasizes interactive exercises and real-life simulations for his students. He minimizes traditional textbook work and lectures and replaces them with case studies taken from current news items and examination of the latest corporate procedures.

"I like playful approaches," Paton said. "I try to give my students about a teaspoonful of theory and then make them put it to work." Paton teaches corporate social responsibility, which involves looking at different frameworks for business ethics.

Accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, SFSU's College of Business enrolls nearly 5,000 undergraduate and 900 graduate students in traditional full-time programs and an accelerated MBA for working executives. Each year the College of Business awards more business degrees than Stanford, University of California, Berkeley and University of San Francisco combined, and is the largest grantor of MBAs to minority students in the United States. All of its full-time faculty members hold doctoral degrees, and most have experience with commercial enterprises and engage in applied business research.
