Gifts for the graduating Gator

May 27, 2004

Image of the DVD cover for the Spike Lee film Clockers in which Delroy Lindo plays a title roleWhat better gift for a graduating Gator than something that fellow alumni or faculty have helped produce? Books, movies and products with a Gator connection are simple but memorable tokens to remember the University. As an update to previous graduation and holiday gift lists, here are some new listings:

Consider a movie DVD featuring fellow graduate Delroy Lindo, who completes his undergraduate studies this year. This 51-year-old cinema major already has a collection of celluloid on his resume, with supporting roles in such films as "Malcolm X," "The Cider House Rules" and "Clockers."

For graduates who are off to see the world, travel writer and editor Carole Terwilliger Meyers (BA '68) offers handy travel tips in her book, "Weekend Adventures in Northern California," available at the Carousel Press Web site.

Alum Regina Louise offers a rare look into the inner world of unwanted children in her memoir, "Somebody's Someone." Louise is the founder of the "Esther Collins Memorial Children's Foundation for Literacy" and was recently featured on NPR. More information can be found at Louise's Web site.

For additional book titles by such alumnus authors as Anne Rice (BA '64, MA '65), Frances Mayes (MA '75) and Po Bronson (MFA '95), see previous holiday and commencement suggestions.

Image of a page from Berggruen's book on PicassoLet Pablo Picasso inspire art graduates with a color catalog from John Berggruen's (BA '67) San Francisco Gallery. "Picasso:The Berggruen Album," features 26 reproductions of erotic drawings that Picasso completed in 1970.

Thespians stepping out on stage may find an unlikely muse in alum Stephen Kaufman. Kaufman, better known as Thoth, performed at the 2002 Academy Awards and was the subject of an Oscar-winning documentary. A storyteller and street performer, Thoth vocalizes self-written mythological tales with dance, violin and percussions. His CDs and a DVD of the documentary are available at his Web site.

Finally, what's a celebration without some bubbly? Alum Kermit Lynch, author and well-known French wine importer, offers a wide selection at Kermit Lynch Wine Merchants in Berkeley. For information, call (510) 524-1524. Pahlmeyer Winery, founded by Jayson Pahlmeyer (BA '69), prides itself on producing some of the finest Bordeaux-style red, Merlot and Chardonnay wines. For distributors, visit Pahlmeyer's Web site.
