College of Extended Learning

Any adult in the community may enroll in University courses without being formally admitted to the University. To find out details of enrollment, please contact SFSU College of Extended Learning at (415) 405-7700.


Open University

Through Open University anyone who is not formally admitted to SFSU may participate in regular university classes. Registration is easy - formal admission to SFSU is not required.

High school students who will have completed their junior year by June may register with the written support of their principal or counselor accompanying their registration form and fees. Earning Credit Toward a Degree Through Open University Open University courses are recorded as resident credit on SFSU transcripts and can count toward undergraduate and graduate degrees at SFSU, but there are limitations.

Please contact the Registrar's office at (415) 338-2350 before registration to determine if you are eligible for Open University. Matriculated (admitted) SFSU students may not enroll through Open University.

To enroll:

  • Attend the first class meeting.
  • Obtain the instructor's signature or permit sticker on the College of Extended Learning registration worksheet
        if the instructor approves your admission to the class.
  • Enroll by returning the form to the College of Extended Learning office

Over-Sixty Program

The Over 60 Degree Program is for people age 60 or older who want to take classes for credit or earn a baccalaureate or master's degree. The cost is only $3 per semester, and there is no application fee.

To be admitted, you must meet the standard requirements for admission to SFSU and complete the formal admissions process. You must be a high school graduate and have been a California resident for at least one year prior to application. Participants may study part or full time, in undergraduate or graduate courses, on a space-available basis. Openings are limited and qualified applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Those interested in enrolling in the Over 60 Degree Program as an undergraduate should call 415/338-2143 for questions and to obtain an application. For information on graduate-level study in the Over 60 Degree Program, call the Graduate Division at 415/338-2234. Please indicate on your application that you would like to enroll through the Over 60 Degree Program.

.Eldercollege

Eldercollege is for people age 50 or older who want to enroll in SFSU classes for fun or personal enrichment. Eldercollege students may enroll in any fall, spring or summer semester class on a space available, noncredit basis for just $55 a semester. Eldercollege participants have access to the J. Paul Leonard Library, the Cesar Chavez Student Center, and most other campus facilities. Please note that courses offered through the College of Extended Learning are not part of this program.
