The purpose of this document is to provide step-by-step instructions on installing and configuring Lotus Notes 7.0.3 on a Macintosh computer.
Prerequisites:
- You must be running Mac OS X 10.4.2 or higher to run Lotus Notes.
- To install Lotus Notes you must have administrator privileges. If you do not, contact your local technical support for assistance.
- Lotus Notes requires 2GB of free space to be installed. Make sure you have at least this amount of free space available.
Install (or upgrade) Lotus Notes 7.0.3
Read these instructions completely before starting the installation: If your computer is on-campus you may need assistance from your local IT staff during the installation. If this is not your first Notes installation you may need a copy of your Notes ID file from an existing installation. How to get a copy of your ID file ,and how to tell whether or not you need to, are described in the installation instructions.
DO NOT attempt to download the Notes Installer through a dial-up modem connection: Bring a blank CD-R disk or USB flash drive to ADM 110 and we will give you a copy of the installer.
Note: Lotus Notes can be installed on more than one machine with no conflicts since all data resides in the database up to 2.9 GB. However, if you plan to install it on multiple computers, you must copy your current Notes ID file installed on your current Lotus Notes application. Your Notes ID file will be located in User Home/Library/Application Support/ Lotus Notes Data/ and will be named "account.id" where your account name replaces "account", e.g. if your account name was "janedoe" then your Notes ID file would be named "janedoe.id".
Upgrades from previous Notes 7 versions: If you have Notes 7.0.0 or 7.0.2 installed in multi-user mode you can install Notes 7.0.3 without uninstalling the previous version. Simply download the installer by clicking on the Download Lotus Notes 7.0.3 button and proceed to Installing lotus notes section of the instructions.
No other applications can be running when installing Notes so print this document now. Allow at least 30 minutes to complete the installation to an on-campus computer. Off-campus installations using a fast Internet connection (i.e., DSL or Cable) require at least an extra 15 to 20 minutes.
Log into the Mac user account you will be in when using Notes. This account must have local administrative rights while you are installing Notes. If you are using a university-owned computer and do not have an administrative account, you will need assistance from your local technical support group.
For New Lotus Notes Install:
- If you do not know your email server name,
- Go to: http://www.sfsu.edu/email
- Log in using your SFSU ID and PAC number.
- Find your account name then look at the last column of the page to find your email server name. For example, mail05a (that's a zero in front of the 5). Write it down, this will be needed later while setting up Lotus Notes.

- Logout of the SFSU Email Services page.
- Click on the button to download the Lotus Notes Installer: Most Web browsers download files to your desktop unless you have changed this default location. If your computer does not have a fast connection to the Internet, bring a blank CD-R disk or USB flash drive to ADM 110 and request a copy of the installer.
- You must have a copy of your Notes ID file on your computer and know your Notes password. To get your Notes ID file, follow the procedure below that best describes your Notes installation and usage history.
Procedure 1: Your account's Notes password has not been changed and is still the original password. This should always be true the first time Notes is installed for your account. The Notes ID will be used to identify your account to the application. The file will be named "account.id", where "account" is your SFSU e-mail username. Note: This Notes ID file will contain your original password, setup when you first setup your first SFSU email account.
Follow the steps below to download your Notes ID file and verify your Notes password. Your Notes password will be displayed on-screen, so take precautions to keep it from being seen by other people.
- Go to: https://inside.sfsu.edu/adt/admin/adt.nsf/starthere.
- Enter your SFSU ID and your current Email Password, then click Log In to take you to the Lotus Notes Upgrade Web page.
- Click on Click Here to Pick Up a Copy of Your ID File to open the User ID Archive page.

- Your Notes password is displayed in the ID Password field. Be aware that your Notes password and email password start out the same, but are independent of each other. Changing one does not change the other, so they may be different.
- An icon of your Notes ID file is displayed at the bottom of the page. Its file name is in the form account.id, where account is replaced by your SFSU email account name. For example, if your SFSU email account name is janedoe, then your Notes ID file would be named janedoe.id. Click on the link to your Notes ID file and save it to your desktop.
- Close the User ID Archive page.
If you have not printed this documentation already you must do so now because the Notes installation will close any other open applications before running.
