Policy and Procedures for Internet Account Eligibility

San Francisco State University encourages communication among the members of the University community. It also recognizes the needs of the campus community to access the valuable resources found on the Internet. However, SFSU must manage its resources in an effective and equitable manner . This policy identifies Internet access eligibility categories for members of the University community and establishes cost allocation and fees, together with procedures for obtaining Internet accounts.

Eligibility Categories

Faculty

Regular SFSU faculty are appointed through the Office of Faculty Affairs in faculty collective bargaining unit classifications. Emeritus faculty status is determined by the Office of Academic Affairs. Internet access for regular and emeriti SFSU faculty is provided at no cost to these faculty.

All other faculty and instructors affiliated with SFSU not in the above categories may have access to the Internet on a fee basis. Sponsoring units (e.g., College of Extended Learning, American Language Institute) must certify each semester that these individuals are employed on a regular basis and eligible for Internet access.

Administrators and Staff

Regular SFSU administrators are members of the Management Personnel Plan. Regular SFSU staff are members of a collective bargaining unit. Internet access for regular SFSU administrators and staff is provided at no cost to the administrator or staff member.

Managers and staff members of units affiliated with SFSU not in the above categories may have access to the Internet on a fee basis. Sponsoring units (e.g., Franciscan Shops, Child Care Center, SFSU Foundation) must certify each semester that these individuals are employed on a regular basis and eligible for Internet access.

Students

Matriculated SFSU students possess a validated Student Identification Card and are enrolled for regular credit classes. Internet access for matriculated SFSU students is provided at no cost to the student.

Other students in programs sponsored by units affiliated with SFSU not in the above category may have access to the Internet on a fee basis. Sponsoring units (e.g., College of Extended Learning, American Language Institute) must certify that these individuals are students actively enrolled in one of their programs for the current term and eligible for Internet access.

Sponsored Projects

For Internet access purposes, sponsored projects are those which have a current budgeted program with the SFSU Foundation or the University (as opposed to volunteer programs). Project Directors and Principal Investigators may purchase Internet accounts for employees and participants of the project who are not otherwise provided access from one of the other eligibility categories. Internet access costs should be included as a project budget item when proposals are submitted to funding agencies.

Account Procedures

Procedures for obtaining Internet accounts for SFSU faculty, staff, and students provided access at no cost to the individual may be obtained from the Division of Information Technology, Administration Building, Room 110, phone 338-1420.

Internet accounts for other eligible individuals are detailed in the "Internet Access Payment Procedures". There is a $5 initial set up fee and a $15 monthly charge, with a minimum number of months required, to be paid in advance. All accounts will have a termination date and must be renewed prior to that date if continuity is to be maintained.
