FEDERAL PROGRAMS

  • FEDERAL STAFFORD LOAN CANCELLATION:
  • If you received a Stafford Loan on or after October 1, 1998, and you teach full time for five consecutive years in a low-income school, you might be eligible to have a portion of the loan cancelled. Up to $17500.00. This applies to FFEL Stafford Loans, Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans, and in some cases, Consolidation Loans.

  • PERKINS LOAN FORGIVENESS OR CANCELLATION:
  • Up to 100% of a student’s Federal Perkins Loan may be cancelled if they serve full-time in a public or non-profit elementary or secondary school system. They must teach in a school serving students from low-income families; serve as special education teacher; or teach mathematics, science, foreign languages and bilingual education. Other subjects may qualify based on an individual state’s educational shortage area.

  • TEACH FOR AMERICA

  • As part of Americorps, Teach for America provides loan forbearance and interest payments on qualified student loans during the two years of service that are required For Americorp service.

    CALIFORNIA LOAN ASSUMPTION PROGRAM

  • Assumption Program of Loans for Education (APLE)
  • The APLE is a competitive teacher incentive program designed to encourage outstanding students, district interns, and out-of-state teachers to become California teachers in subject areas where a critical teacher shortage has been identified or in designated schools meeting specific criteria established by the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

    APLE applicants must agree to teach in one of the following teacher shortage areas:

  • Mathematics (Grades 7 - 12)
  • Science (Life/Physical) (Grades 7 - 12)
  • Foreign Language
  • Special Education
  • English(Grades 7 - 12)
  • Low-Income Area School
  • School Serving Rural Area
  • State Special School
  • School with a High Percentage of Emergency Permit Teachers
  • Low-Performing School
  • APLE participants who agree to, and provide, the designated teaching service in the area of math, science, or special education are eligible to receive an additional $1,000 per year in loan assumption benefits. Participants meeting this requirement who provide teaching service in a California public school that is ranked in the lowest 20th percentile of the API are eligible to receive an additional $1,000 per year, making the total amount of loan assumption $19,000.
