Quick reference for moderating majordomo list from Eudora:

When someone sends a message to a moderated list the owner of the list (often owner and moderator are the same) will receive a message as follows:

    Date: Mon, 9 Mar 1998 13:30:19 -0800 (PST)
    From: owner-mailing-list@sfsu.edu
    X-Authentication-Warning: diana.sfsu.edu: majordom set sender to owner-mailing-list@sfsu.edu using -f
    To: nobody@sfsu.edu
    Subject: BOUNCE mailing-list@sfsu.edu: Approval required:

    >From nobody@sfsu.edu Mon Mar 9 13:30:12 1998
    Received: from comp_name (comp_name.sfsu.edu [130.212.51.255])
    by diana.sfsu.edu (8.8.7/8.8.7) with SMTP id NAA09814
    for <mailing-list>; Mon, 9 Mar 1998 13:30:12 -0800 (PST)
    Message-Id: 3.0.5.32.19980309133027.0090f380@sfsu.edu
    X-Sender: nobody@sfsu.edu
X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.5 (32)
    Date: Mon, 09 Mar 1998 13:30:27 -0800
    To: mailing-list
    From: Sender nobody@sfsu.edu
    Subject: test to show bounce
    Mime-Version: 1.0
    Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

This is a test message to show a bounce in Eudora.

In Eudora, to send this message to your mailing list (in this case "mailing-list") you would click on the redirect button or choose "Redirect" under the "Message" menu.

You can now address the message back to the mailing list. In this case in the To: field I would type: mailing-list@sfsu.edu. It is not necessary to change either the From: or Subject: headers.

Next add the appropriate approved header. The new body of the message should look exactly like this:

    approved: password

    >From nobody@sfsu.edu Mon Mar 9 13:30:12 1998
    Received: from comp_name (comp_name.sfsu.edu [130.212.51.187])
    by diana.sfsu.edu (8.8.7/8.8.7) with SMTP id NAA09814
    for <mailing-list>; Mon, 9 Mar 1998 13:30:12 -0800 (PST)
    Message-Id: 3.0.5.32.19980309133027.0090f380@sfsu.edu
    X-Sender: nobody@sfsu.edu (Unverified)
X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.5 (32)
    Date: Mon, 09 Mar 1998 13:30:27 -0800
    To: mailing-list
    From: Sender nobody@sfsu.edu
    Subject: test to show bounce
    Mime-Version: 1.0
    Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

This is a test message to show a bounce in Eudora.

The "approved:" is not case sensitive, however the password is. The password should be either the list administrative password OR the list moderator password (for instance mailing-list.pass as a moderator password) Also note that there are NO line spaces between the approved line and the next line which starts with ‘Received:’. This is VERY IMPORTANT and it is how Majordomo reads approved messages. Also note there is a line space after the last line of the header lines ‘Content-Type…’ and the first line of the message. This is by default in Eudora, but is also a necessity.

At this point you can send the message to the list. The list will then see the message like below:

    X-Authentication-Warning: diana.sfsu.edu: majordom set sender to owner-mailing-list@sfsu.edu using -f
    X-Sender: nobody@sfsu.edu (Unverified)
X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.5 (32)
    Date: Mon, 09 Mar 1998 13:30:27 -0800
    To: mailing-list
    From: Sender nobody@sfsu.edu
    Subject: test to show bounce
    Sender: owner-mailing-list@sfsu.edu
    Reply-To: mailing-list@sfsu.edu

This is a test message to show a bounce in Eudora.

For a message to be sent directly to the list (i.e. not a bounce from another person) all that is needed is to put the ‘approved: password’ on the very first line of the message, and one line space between the "approved:" line and the first line of the message.
