Dr. Hanson is a Professor of Early Childhood Special Education in the Department of Special Education and Child and Adolescent Development through the Marian Wright Edelman for the Study of Children, Youth and Families. Her primary teaching responsibilities include graduate courses in atypical infant development, family systems and services, atypical learning and development, and infant and preschool intervention.

Research Interests

Primary research interests and grant activities have centered on inclusion in early childhood education, early social-emotional development, policy in early education, and early intervention for children at risk and/or disabled. Dr. Hanson has published widely in the areas of early intervention, atypical infant development, family services, cross-cultural training, and personnel preparation.

She is the author of numerous articles and chapters and she has edited, co-authored, or authored the following books: Teaching the Infant with Down Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professionals (2nd ed.); Atypical Infant Development (2nd ed.); Teaching the Young Child with Motor Delays; A Guide for Parents and Professionals, with Dr. Susan Harris; Early Intervention: Implementing Child and Family Services for Infants and Toddlers Who are At-Risk or Disabled (2nd ed.), with Dr. Eleanor Lynch; Homecoming for Babies After the Intensive Care Nursery: A Guide for Parents in Supporting their Baby's Early Development, A Guide for Professionals in Supporting Families and Their Infant's Early Development, with Kathleen VandenBerg; and Developing Cross-Cultural Competence: A Guide for Working with Children and Their Families , with Dr. Eleanor Lynch.
