As the first home of the Confucius Institute in Western United States, San Francisco State University's Confucius Institute is one of twenty Chinese language centers with offices around the world dedicated to making Chinese language instruction readily available to anyone who needs or wishes to learn Chinese. It is in this spirit that our program has developed an ambitious activity plan which sets out to establish new courses in Chinese, creating new second language acquisition materials, training new teachers and developing new curricula, creating resource center and a materials clearinghouse, and creating a teacher credential program.

The Confucius Institute Program was developed in Beijing by China's National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. Major activities include teacher training courses and an new Chinese teaching credential program, immersion programs, seminars and short-term classes, media centers, public events, and exchange programs and internships.
