Internship Program Description
The program provides accounting students the opportunity to earn
academic credit (ACCT 317, Accounting Internship, 3 units) for
appropriate work experience. It is expected that qualified positions
can be found with public accounting firms, government units,
businesses, and not-for-profit organizations.
For a position to qualify for academic credit, it must apply advanced
accounting subjects as a significant part of the job responsibilities.
Advanced accounting subjects are those subjects discussed in
upper-division accounting concentration courses. Data entry and
bookkeeping responsibilities are not qualified activities. For a position
to qualify, it must also constitute at least 300 hours of work experience.
To determine whether a position qualifies, a written job description
should be submitted to Professor Jai Kang.
Professor John O'Shaughnessy will identify available qualified
positions. Such positions are posted outside SCI 316. Students are
also encouraged to locate qualified positions. It is the student's
responsibility to obtain the qualified position by successfully
interviewing for such a position.
Generally, the student must enroll in ACCT 317 during the semester
that the work experience occurs. The exception to this statement
applies to summer internships. Since ACCT 317 is not offered during the
summer semester, students working in qualified jobs during the summer
may enroll in ACCT 317 in the subsequent Fall semester. To allow
the student to meet the course requirements by documenting specifics
of their work experience, the student working during the summer
should contact Professor Jai Kang before the end of the
previous Spring semester.
