AAS 101 Introduction to Asian American Studies (3)
Introduction to objectives, philosophy, and structure of Asian American Studies. Emphasis on the underlying assumptions of the program, relations between the community and the university, and development of a relevant curriculum.

AAS 110 Critical Thinking and the Asian American Experience (3) [GE]
Developing basic skills involved in understanding, criticizing, and constructing arguments by using materials reflective of experiences of Asian Americans and Third World culture in the United States.

AAS 171 Speak Vietnamese I (3)
A beginner's course for non-native speakers, with emphasis on acquiring a basic ability in spoken Vietnamese and a focus on the practical application of the spoken language in the Vietnamese American community.

AAS 172 Speak Vietnamese II (3)
Prerequisites: AA S 171 and consent of instructor. A second semester beginner's course for non-native speakers, with emphasis on building up a conversant skill in spoken and written Vietnamese, focusing on the practical application of the spoken speech in the Vietnamese American community.

AAS 200 History of Asian Americans (3) [US]
Introduction to the history of Asian Americans in the United States. Comparative analysis and discussion of the experience of different Asian American groups and their place in the general history and development of American society. Meets U.S. history requirement.

AAS 205 Asian Americans and American Ideals and Institutions (3) [US,CA]
Introduction to the Asian American experience in the U.S. with specific regard to basic governmental ideals and institutions. Developmental analysis of the impact of Asians on legal-constitutional America and the countervailing impact of political-legal structures imposed on Asians. Meets U.S. government and the California state and local government.

AAS 206 Introduction to Asian American Literature (3) [GE]
Introduction to the critical reading and analysis of Asian American literature. Appreciation of literature from a literary standpoint with attention paid to historical, psychological, and sociological enhancement.

AAS 214 Second Year Written Composition: Asian American Studies (3) [GE]
Prerequisite: ENG 114 or equivalent. Focus on reading and writing with speech as a supportive language skill. College level reading in the various genre to develop breadth and depth of taste in literature. Proficiency in critical reading such as discerning organizational patterns and themes, extracting of supporting facts, interpretation, comparison, logical analysis, and figurative language. Must be taken after student has completed 24 units and before completing 60 units. ABC/NC grading.

AAS 300 Asian Americans in California (3) [GE]
Prerequisite: upper division standing or consent of instructor. Not open to students who have taken AA S 200. A critical survey of the Asian American participation in the building of California from the 1840s, to anti-Asian movements since the 1870s, to contemporary California public policies affecting Asian Americans in the 1990s.

AAS 304 Asian American Community Arts Workshop (3) [GE]
Prerequisite: upper division standing or consent of instructor. Interdisciplinary collaboration in a variety of Asian American creative art forms through community-based workshops. Classwork, 2 units; activity, 1 unit. May be repeated once.

AAS 308 Photographic Exploration of Asian America (3) [GE]
Designed to give students experience in the use of photography as a personal tool for the exploration, recording, understanding, and expression of Asian American life. Classwork, two units; laboratory, one unit. May be repeated once for credit.

AAS 310 Chinese in America (3) [GE]
Prerequisite: upper division standing. The Chinese American experience in critical historical perspective--from the beginning of immigration in the 1850s to the present.

AAS 315 Chinese American Personality (3) [GE]
A critical analysis of the historical, institutional, and cultural sources of Chinese American identity and sensibility. Mental health issues related to self-perception, stereotypes, family problems, institutional racism, and the development of autonomy.

AAS 322 Chinese American Culture-Language and Literature (3) [GE]
Cultural identity of the Chinese American as it is expressed in the language and literature. Analysis of Chinese American writings, fiction, and poetry; Chinese community and its influence on the creative process in literature.

AAS 331 Japanese Americans in the United States (3) [GE]
A study of the historical experience of the Japanese in America with particular emphasis upon the development of Japanese American communities in the context of the development of the western United States.

AAS 335 Japanese American Personality (3) [GE]
Interdisciplinary study of Japanese American character, identity, self-image, and behavioral manifestations of the interaction of American and Japanese cultural values.

AAS 355 Psyche and Behavior of Filipinos (3) [GE]
The psychological and behavioral development of Filipinos. Specific emphasis on the relationship between "traditional" values and problems of ethno-cultural identity, marginality in the American environment.

AAS 363 Survey of Philippine Literature (3) [GE]
An examination of representative literature in oral and written form: vernacular, Spanish, and English. Readings and analyses of such modern literature in English with emphasis on America as locale or concepts of America as a force in some writings.

AAS 370 Vietnamese in America (3) [GE]
Prerequisite: upper division standing. An examination of the origins and causes of Vietnamese movements to the United States and the nature of Vietnamese experience in America in terms of political, cultural, and economic factors.

AAS 372 Vietnamese American Literature (3) [GE]
Prerequisite: upper division standing. A critical survey of Vietnamese American literature with reference to Vietnamese literature: from Vietnamese tradition to Asian American sensibilities.

AAS 375 Vietnamese American Identity (3)
Prerequisite: consent of instructor. A critical examination of the Vietnamese American experience since 1975 with regards to its psychological adaptation, educational adjustment, socio-economic integration, and cultural/ethnic maintenance.

AAS 380 Koreans in America (3) [GE]
Prerequisite: upper division standing or consent of instructor. A critical survey of the history of Korean Americans in the U.S., examining both the historical experience as well as the sociological, political, and economic implications of being a minority and immigrant in the United States.

AAS 406 Asian American Workshop in Creative Writing (3) [GE]
Workshop in the several forms of creative writing to develop new perspectives in the structure, style, and techniques of creating fiction from an Asian American perspective. Study of selected literary works from the standpoint of creative impetus. May be repeated once for credit. Classwork, two units; laboratory, one unit.

AAS 434 Concentration Camps, U.S.A. I (3)
Causes and consequences of the World War II evacuation, detention, and internment of 110,000 persons of Japanese ancestry. Topics include personal experiences of internees, legality of government actions, and subsequent effects on the Japanese American people.

AAS 444 Japanese American Art and Expression (3) [GE]
An examination of Japanese American artistic expression. The study of the development and evolvement of Japanese American art and the examination of historical, social, and cultural factors influencing the artistic expression of the Japanese in America.

AAS 456 Filipinos in America: Problems of Transition (3) [GE]
The immigration of the Filipinos to the United States; various coping mechanisms used in response to adjustment problems; the changing structure of the community.

AAS 502 Asian American Children's/Teen Literature (3) [GE]
Prerequisite: upper division standing. Critical analyses of literary works by Asian American writers for the young, from preschool through secondary school age; also, on how Asian Americans are depicted in American literature written for the young, and their impact on the youth reading this literature.

AAS 550 Asian Americans of Mixed Heritages (3)
Prerequisite: upper division standing. A critical examination of issues concerning Asian Americans of mixed ethnic background and heritages, with focus on the groups' interracial profile in relation to their ethnic and cultural sensibilities.

AAS 575 Asian American Community Health Issues (3) [GE]
Prerequisite: upper division standing. Examination of community health concepts and needs specific to the Asian Pacific American Communites, to provide students with knoledge and practical skills in community health issues and service through service learning. May be repeated for a total of six units.

AAS 603 Asian American Women (3) [GE]
Prerequisite: upper division standing. Examination of the social, political, and economic situation of Asian American women. Particular attention to the situation within their communities as well as within the family and larger society.

AAS 622 Asian American Women's Literature and the Arts (3)
Prerequisite: upper division standing. Critical survey and analysis of works by Asian American women writers and artists as well as on how Asian American women are depicted in American literature and the arts.

AAS 629 Selected Topics in Chinese American Studies (2-5)
Topic to be specified in Class Schedule. Suggested themes for research and critical analysis are: patterns of acculturation and assimilation; exclusionary legislation; changes in generational attitudes and values; interpersonal problems with larger society. May be repeated for credit as topics vary.

AAS 649 Selected Topics in Japanese American Studies (2-5)
Topic to be specified in Class Schedule. Some suggested themes are the Japanese American labor movement, the Wakamatsu Colony, Japanese acculturation and assimilation, Japanese American communities in California, World War II evacuation and relocation. May be repeated for credit as topics vary.

AAS 680 Community: Changes and Development (3) [GE]
Prerequisite: six units of upper division course work in AAS or consent of instructor. Examination of Asian American communities: origins, changes, economics, trends of residential and community patterns. Implications, effects of new immigration and population growth. Community research methods.

AAS 685 Projects in the Teaching of Asian American Studies (1-4)
Prerequisite: upper division standing and consent of instructor. Academic service learning practicum/internship experience as an undergraduate instructional aide. Participation in the teaching of a regular instructionally-related class. Limited to undergraduate students only. May be repeated for a total of four units for credit.

AAS 688 Community Service Internship (3)
Prerequisite: upper division standing and consent of instructor. Supervised fieldwork/service in an approved Asian American community organization or agency Attendance at seminar required. May be repeated for a total of 6 units.

AAS 693 Asian Americans and the Mass Media (3) [GE]
Examines recurring images and treatment of Asian Americans in mass media, especially motion pictures, television, advertising, popular literature, and commercial art. Experiences of American minorities in the entertainment industry and discussion of Asian American media expression.

AAS 694 Asian American Arts and Culture (3)
Topic to be specified in Class Schedule. Investigates the role of the arts in defining and expressing the cultural identity of Asian Americans. Involves exploration of specific Asian American artistic/creative activities and/or the work of particular artists. May be repeated for credit when topics vary.

AAS 695 Seminar on Contemporary Asian American Communities (3) [GE]
Prerequisite: six units of upper division course work in AA S or consent of instructor. Seminar on contemporary Asian American communities, emphasizing current issues and based on fieldwork and community participation. May be repeated for credit on advisement.

AAS 697 Proseminar in Asian American Studies (3)
Prerequisite: AA S major, with 24 upper division units in Asian American Studies. A culminating experience course for Asian American Studies majors, practical application of research methodology in Asian American Studies through critical examination, analysis, and peer critique to develop a publishable product.

AAS 699 Special Study (1-3)
Prerequisites: consent of instructor and department chair. Supervised individual study of a particular problem in Asian American Studies. Enrollment by petition (form available in Asian American Studies Office).
